Unmanned Aircraft Systems Job at Virginia Dept of Transportation – 3.8 in Richmond, VA
VDOT is seeking a professional with technical expertise and professional understanding in the development and implementation of agency guidance for safe use of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS). The primary function of this position will be to coordinate the roll out of a new UAS regulatory compliance program internal to VDOT. Duties will include, but are not limited to: working with operators to register all UAS users; consulting with principle investigators (PI), managers, visitors, citizens, and third party operators; reviewing and approving VDOT guidance and work plans for district, consultant, and divisional UAS operations; assisting with the training and certifying of VDOT personnel to operate UAS; planning and executing activities required to ensure protection of UAS flight operations, and UAS interaction with rotary aircraft operations; maintaining VDOT pilot certification, statistics on flights, up to date training materials, and current standards based on federal and state regulations. This position will also coordinate with the Virginia Department of Aviation (DOAV).
Demonstrated experience flying UAS. Working knowledge of the Federal Aviation Regulations sufficient to understand the requirements of manned aircraft and unmanned aircraft to help in developing strategies for use and integration of UAS into Virginia and National airspace. Experience with Model or other Unmanned Aircraft Operations sufficient to understand the operation of unmanned aircraft and have developed skills and safety practices in operating UAS. Knowledge of safety standards related to small UAS. Demonstrated experience in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with Federal and other State agencies, peers and others.
Proven ability to plan, organize, and coordinate policies relating to UAS management.
Private pilot’s certificate or higher with 100 hours of manned aircraft pilot time or equivalent experience to sufficiently understand and apply the rules and regulations in working with airports, manned aircraft pilots, UAS pilots, public recreational UAS pilots, etc. Remote Pilot Certificate (small Unmanned Aircraft Systems).
Working knowledge of and experience with different payload configurations for aircraft. BS degree in civil engineering or land surveying; or a combination of education and/or related technical experience may substitute for degree.
