Under general supervision of a Software Director, and in collaboration with other functional managers and key technical stake holders in conjunction with the Marketing & Sales branch of the organization. The Software Engineering Manager will provide both leadership to the development team and help them solve challenging aspects of their projects where needed, leading by example with solid software engineering disciplines and effective coding practices. Execution and architecture heavily influence the viability of the product portfolio from the standpoint of performance, maintenance, safety, certification, and profitability. Hence the Software Engineering Manager will be engaged through-out the development lifecycle ensuring alignment to scope and that execution is optimal in support of a robust design for both internal, and outsourced projects. Main Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate productive and positive team communication and collaboration. This includes but is not limited to: Fostering an environment of transparency and open discussion, resource planning and working closely with other leaders and direct reports.
  • Build in-depth understanding of CoreAVI processes, methods, and standards; your employees’ skills, experience, passions, and availability; so that as new project needs arise, you can quickly assess the nature of the work and assign the best employee to the job.
  • Mentor, challenge, and support the professional, technical, and personal growth of team members. Help develop their career path by assigning projects tailored to their potential, personality, work style and goals while encouraging healthy exploration beyond their “comfort zone”.
  • Managerial responsibilities for direct reports (5-10): 1on1’s, timesheets, vacation approval, performance reviews, skill assessment and skill growth planning, etc.
  • Expedite project deliverables while maintaining sustainable work pace that does not compromise on standards and quality.
  • Build and manage projects using agile / water-fall methods, working closely with Project Managers.
  • Assist with recruiting new developers as needed, including onboarding and training.
  • Contribute to improvements in process, policy, budgeting, tools, and methods which facilitate operational excellence and innovative product development for CoreAVI’s expanding business.
  • Coordinate the work of highly skilled geographically distributed project teams that include CoreAVI employees in addition to a contractor base workforce, who are working on complex embedded software and hardware systems.
  • Manage resource assignments and allocation forecasting to accommodate immediate / future project execution expectations. Work closely with Project Management to establish milestone schedules based on capacity and priority.
  • Assist with the creation, review, and approval of project proposals and or statements of work, from both an outgoing and or incoming perspective.
  • Ensure that tasks meet project objectives based on agreed to customer contracts.
  • Lead / coordinate / facilitate architectural discussions and conduct trades in support of project execution and product proposals.
  • Participate with estimates for new pursuits. Coordinate with the development teams to ensure that estimates are coherent and consistent (founded on clear: Objectives, Assumptions, Risks, and a Basis of Estimate).
  • Work with other managers and stakeholders to ensure bilateral project dependencies are understood and executed.
  • Monitor and escalate risks with project execution, help establish viable mitigation plans.
  • Clarify and communicate resource needs, trade-offs, and execution priorities that align with evolving program risks and priorities.
  • Identify, track, and drive resolution of cross-functional issues impeding successful project execution.
  • Participate with the generation of status slides for customer and executive messaging.
  • Role will include interaction with customers / partners in addition to certification authorities.

Required Qualifications:

  • Exceptional organizational, communication, collaboration, persuasion, team building, and other interpersonal skills.
  • Strong sense of accountability and ownership. A diligent, tenacious, high integrity, and strong work ethic.
  • Experience with embedded, safety critical and certifiable software development practices.
  • Engineering Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical, Computer, or Systems; or equivalent technical experience.
  • 4+ years of experience in managing and growing embedded software engineers.
  • 5+ years experience in software development (C/C++).
  • Experience working on the lowest levels of software stack directly interfacing with hardware such as BSPs, chip initialization, programming the hardware to execute graphics operations, etc.
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills are crucial.
  • Experience with various source control management systems, such as git and agile methodologies such as Kanban or Scrum.
  • Passionate about people, process, and technologies and able to inspire and motivate others.
  • Experience setting and achieving sound goals. For example, “SMART” goal principles.
  • Ability to build and maintain productive relationships with a diverse array of stakeholders and groups.
  • Strong work ethic with a sense of ownership, urgency, and drive and an unwavering commitment to do the right thing.

Desired Skills & Experience:

  • Experienced facilitating embedded software engineering teams through waterfall and agile processes (Scrum Master certification a plus).
  • Exceptionally adept at the Microsoft Office tool suite, including Visio, SharePoint, OneDrive, Teams and Project. In addition to requirement development and tracing tools such as: DOORS, RTC, RTRT, Git, and Jira.
  • Experienced with one or more professional services automation systems (SalesForce, Mavenlink, Kimble, FinancialForce, SAP S/4Hana…).
  • Experience with Six Sigma, Lean principles, CMMI, OKRs (Objectives & Key Results).
  • Experience with embedded real-time operating systems (VxWorks, Integrity, DEOS, QNX, etc.)
  • General Architectural Construct Knowledge (Safety Critical Embedded Real Time Graphics Driver Development, Multicore, Inter Process Communication, Interrupt Management, CPU/GPU Synchronization Methods, Multi-Threaded / Multi-Partitioned Frameworks, Virtualization Methods, Hypervisor Architecture Constructs).
  • Experience with certification regulatory compliance criteria and audit support (SLR / HLR / LLR Requirement Generation and Traceability, Structural / MCDC / Statement Coverage, Control and Data Coupling assessment compliance, Time and Space Partitioning concepts and mitigations, MISRA Coding standards).
  • Working experience with open standard consortiums such as FACE and Khronos.
  • Previous experience as an embedded software developer and or knowledge of Graphics and compute framework is a plus (OpenGL SC 1.0, OpenGL SC 2.0, Vulkan 1.2, OpenCL 3.0, OpenVX, SYCL, BLAS / FFT, Video Encode / Decode).
  • Working experience with industry pertinent coding languages (C/C++, GLSL, ESSL, SRIR-V, GPU-ISA, Graphics and Compute Shaders, CUDA).
  • Experience with Defense and Aerospace markets, safety critical avionics systems, and DO-178 certification.
  • Experience with Automotive markets, Safety Element out of Context Compliance, Functional Safety Concepts, and ISO26262 certification.
  • Master’s degree in Engineering and/or Business.
