Based at our state-of-the-art research centre – the Global Technology Centre – in Bristol, we are looking for a Patent Analyst who will provide advice and support in relation to the patenting activities of the Civil Airframe and Defence business lines. At the GTC we carry out collaborative research and development into technology for the next generation of fuel-efficient aircraft. As part of the legal team – but working on a daily basis with our technologists – your primary focus will be on undertaking prior art searching, landscaping studies and overseeing third party watch activities. You will work closely with the Global IP Manager for the Civil Airframe and Defence business lines to support the maintenance and development of the IP portfolio of GKN Aerospace.
How You’ll Contribute
In this role, you will:
undertake prior art searches and patent landscaping studies to support the development and implementation of IP strategies; analyse output and generate reports.
establish and update an effective third party patent watch programme to monitor patent activities of key competitors and identify third party patent activity of interest.
liaise with technical and commercial personnel to ensure effective outputs from searches, studies and watches.
ensure appropriate quality and cost control, timely delivery and checking of any searches and studies performed by third parties.
support the Global Intellectual Property Manager in harvesting and reviewing new invention disclosures – including working with inventors to support the submission of new invention disclosures, preparation of materials for presentation to the Intellectual Property Committee and providing timely feedback.
instruct, manage and review the work of external patent attorneys in drafting new patent applications and prosecuting patent applications through to grant, providing effective liaison between the external patent attorneys and the inventors to ensure an efficient and effective relationship and effective management of costs.
ensure the effective renewal of all relevant registered intellectual property rights including ensuring that all relevant databases are maintained with up to date details and that timely instructions are provided to external third parties involved in the payment of renewal fees.
support the Global Intellectual Property Manager to implement the Intellectual Property IP strategy, making suggestions to improve processes and approaches, influencing team ways of working and discussions on opportunities for improvements.
What You’ll Bring
To help us make a difference, you’ll bring your passion and expertise/ talent for what you do along with the following skills, experience, qualifications and attributes:
Bachelor Degree in Engineering or science – ideally mechanical, electrical or physics.
significant experience of conducting prior art searches and landscaping studies within an industrial organisation or within a legal firm/patent attorney firm.
experience in a range of intellectual property matters, particularly patent prosecution matters.
track record of being able to instruct and manage external patent attorneys and other external stakeholders across multiple jurisdictions.
ability to deal with a diverse range of technologies and rapidly gain a good understanding of new technical areas.
a strong and independent personality, with the ability to operate substantially independently but being able to recognize when issues require support or escalation.
an ability to work closely and in detail with technologists in the business together with the ability to work and communicate effectively with non-technically qualified employees, including senior management.
integrity and courage; able to adapt own behaviour and communication style to suit the context, including sensitively delivering tough messages.
an ability to think laterally and has a track record of delivering business-focused solutions.
good judgement and sound decision making even when not in possession of all the facts.
