Operations Manager, Aviation Forecasting Centre Job at Australian Bureau of Meteorology – in Brisbane QLD

Executive Level 2 Lower, Ongoing

$119,495 – $134,208 + 15.4% super

Brisbane

The Brisbane Aviation Forecast Centre (AFC) Manager is responsible for a team of 35 highly trained meteorologists who provide the specialised aviation forecasts and warnings used by pilots across all of northern Australia and international flights arriving from ports around the globe. Typically, forecast teams of 6, led by a senior meteorologist, work in two shifts per day to provide 24-hour operations every day of the year.

The Brisbane AFC is one of three operational aviation teams that together provide the full suite of aviation meteorological services. There is also a non-operational section, called the Service Delivery Optimisation Team, who maintain the procedures, knowledge bases, and provide the training and coaching to support the AFC manager to ensure high performance operations. The Brisbane AFC Manager is a member of the Aviation Operations leadership team led by Fons van Loij and comprising the three other team managers.

The Aviation, Land and Maritime Transport Program is organised into three streams: Customer Engagement, Aviation Service Development and Aviation Operations. Thus, the operations centre manager can focus on service delivery while others focus on understanding industry needs and developing the science, technology and forecasting approaches to ensure we provide a world-class service.

To be successful in this key role you will be people-focussed leader with experience fostering high performing teams. You will understand how excellent and consistent service delivery is achieved by a combination of procedures and professional knowledge and judgement; familiarity working within a Quality Management System will be highly regarded. You will understand the particular demands of managing frontline teams working on shift. You will seek and value customer feedback as the food of champions and employ constructive criticism to inspire continual improvement.

Note that while knowledge of aviation meteorology would be an advantage, the Bureau is seeking a strong leader with operational service delivery experience. Should the successful candidate not have an aviation background, we will provide training necessary to build their knowledge over time and also to appoint an assistant AFC manager with subject matter expertise to provide immediate support.
