The Bureau’s National Security and Space Program provides space weather warnings and alerts to sectors integral to Australia’s national security and economic prosperity, and community safety through government partners and key industry sectors to ensure they have the right information at the right time, to deliver on their goals.
As we are approaching the peak of the eleven-year solar cycle – solar maximum, where the frequency and intensity of space weather events are likely to increase, the Bureau is transforming its space weather capability to best support government partners and key industry sectors with persistent, timely and accurate space weather warnings and alerts so they are best prepared to take appropriate action to mitigate against space weather events. The Bureau is also relocating the space weather capability from Sydney to Adelaide, where our government partners, including the Australian Space Agency and Defence, along with industry, are well established.

The Space Weather Research to Operations team will provide the scientific research and associated software development capability to deliver operational models and algorithms for new and improved forecast, warning and alert products for Defence, aviation, telecommunications, energy, resources, community, and the space industry sectors. The requirement for these warnings and alerts will be guided by the Customer Engagement Hub. The measure of success is ensuring warnings and alerts can be delivered and operated by the Australian Space Weather Forecasting Centre.
To be successful you must have:
Technical knowledge of space weather or a related scientific discipline.
Experience undertaking scientific research in space weather or a related field and associated model and software development.
Experience leading research projects through to implementation in an operational environment.
Excellent written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
