The American Airlines Safety Department acts as a Force Multiplier, facilitating the appropriate connections within multiple operating groups to effectively manage risk throughout the operation. Within the Safety Department are the Fatigue Risk Management team and the Air Operations Safety Management System team.
The Fatigue Risk Management team is responsible for managing the pilot fatigue removal program; fatigue education for all applicable AA employees; the FAA approved alternative method of compliance projects for FAR Part 117; and fatigue research studies in line operations. The team is also responsible for representing and leading industry initiatives on these topics.
The Air Operations Safety Management System (SMS) team facilitates risk management and SMS working groups for Flight Operations, Flight Service, and Integrated Operations Control (IOC). This also involves assisting the business group in ensuring their compliance with 14 CFR Part 5.
The internship program will focus on projects and process studies for the Fatigue Risk Management and Air Operations SMS teams by assisting in safety assurance functions while enhancing Company policy and FAR compliance.
What You’ll Do
Assist in the development of fatigue and alertness training education for operational workgroups
Facilitate Risk/Change Management processes across multiple workgroups
Perform analysis of flight crewmember fatigue reporting events and identifying trends
Participate in Data Analysis Working Groups reviewing operational safety trends
Implement operational risk management strategies to ensure flight crewmember fitness for duty
Review and sort safety reports from frontline team members
All you’ll need for success
Actively pursuing at least a Bachelor’s degree in Aviation Safety, Management, Human Factors or related field of study
A general understanding of commercial aviation
Experience with all components of Microsoft Office
Strong organizational, analytical, and interpersonal skills
Excellent oral and written communications skills
Working knowledge of the FAR’s, human factors and system safety is highly desired
Pilot, Dispatch, or Flight Attendant experience preferred
Individual must demonstrate initiative and assertiveness and possess the ability to interact with all levels of management and operating departments, as well as outside agencies
