Overview of the role

We are looking for a highly experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to join our team. You will contribute across the Mechanical Engineering process. Operating as part of the Mechanical Design & Analysis team, your work will inform and guide the design process to develop products that achieve the defined performance, functional and regulatory requirements. You will be an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer comfortable working on fast-moving and challenging projects. The application of timely and appropriate design methodologies is key to the delivery of high-quality, reliable products, and to achieving our design and development timelines.

As one of the most senior Mechanical Design Engineers at Animal Dynamics, you will be responsible for the development of our mechanical design capability, ensuring we have the tools and processes appropriate for our projects. The experience that you bring will also help to define how best the mechanical design workflows are integrated with those of product development to produce the most efficient and effective working methods.

This is an excellent opportunity to take responsibility for the design capability and therefore, you must have advanced knowledge of your discipline combined with a proactive and effective approach. You will regularly tackle complex problems requiring considerable thought and may carry technical risk. You will support technical leadership within the function and mentorship to other staff.

You will have a proactive working style with the ability to identify solutions. You will build effective working relationships within your team but also outside your function across the business. You may have responsibility for a discrete part of a project or be working on multiple projects simultaneously, managing priorities, deliverables and multitasking as required.

Responsibilities… what will you do?

As an Associate Principal Mechanical Design Engineer you will be responsible for:

Determining what level of design effort is required as part of the product design and development process to ensure performance, functional and legislative requirements are achieved

Creating designs that are thorough and where required doing:
Concept generation

Design optimisations and trade-off studies

Analysis to determine the best solution

Participating in design reviews throughout the product development process. Defining where analysis may be required

Providing support to other team members in overcoming complex issues within the mechanical design process. Collaborating to ensure design best practice

Supporting the management of the design capability within the Mechanical Engineering team, including people, process and tools:

Taking the lead in ensuring that the design capability is fit for current needs and scalable and extendable to allow incorporation of future requirements and growth

Driving continuous improvement

As an Associate Principal Mechanical Engineer you will also:
Role model positive, proactive behaviour and provide mentorship to other engineers, particularly in the mechanical design engineering domain

Liaise with key stakeholders, including design, test and verification and project management

Maintain appropriate documentation, ensuring compliance with appropriate quality standards

Effectively communicate complex technical detail with other technical peers and appropriately present to the wider company

Ensure industry standards and best practice are incorporated into your work

Essential skills and experience… what are we looking for?

You will have the following skills and experience:
A degree or Masters in a relevant subject (e.g. Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering)

Significant related industry experience

A large depth of knowledge in utilising CAE software and their utilities to produce designs

Proven experience of producing manufacturing drawings, creating technical partnerships, documenting designs and introducing appropriate processes – preferably on Aerospace projects

Proven experience of mathematical analysis of complex structures from first principles

Knowledge of appropriate materials for low-mass/high-strength structures

Knowledge of powertrain systems (ICE, hybrid, electric) and the issues surrounding their integration into a vehicle

Proven experience in applying theories to engineering problem solving

An innovative thinker and genuine problem solver

Highly self-motivated and able to take individual ownership of tasks with minimal supervision and a drive to deliver results

Excellent communication skills – written and oral – including of highly technical concepts

Desirable skills and experience:
Experience in autonomous aerial systems

Experience in working to standards that will allow for certification in the aerospace domain
