Location: Palo Alto, CA

Archer is an aerospace company based in Palo Alto, California building an all-electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft with a mission to advance the benefits of sustainable air mobility. We are designing, manufacturing, and operating an all-electric aircraft that can carry four passengers for 60 miles at speeds of up to 150 mph while producing minimal noise.

Our sights are set high and our problems are hard, and we believe that diversity in the workplace is what makes us smarter, drives better insights, and will ultimately lift us all to success. We are dedicated to cultivating an equitable and inclusive environment that embraces our differences, and supports and celebrates all of our team members.

What you’ll do:

Perform aerodynamic simulations of novel eVTOL aircraft using low- and mid- fidelity tools

Develop linear/non-linear aerodynamic models to help design the transition maneuver from hover to cruise for over actuated eVTOL aircraft

Develop aerodynamic databases for use in 6 degree-of-freedom simulation models

Contribute to the development of Archer in-house aerodynamic mid-fidelity tool

Assess vehicle performance with and without failures throughout the flight envelope

Analyze full-scale and subscale flight data to improve aerodynamic models

Support vehicle aerodynamic design through all phases of the project, from conceptual design to certification

What you need:

BS / MS / PhD in Aeronautics Engineering or related fields

4+ years of experience with BS, or 2+ years of experience with MS, or 0-2 years of experience with PhD modeling rotorcraft, tiltrotor, eVTOL aerodynamics

Strong understanding of fixed-wing and rotorcraft aerodynamics

Strong theoretical background in fluid mechanics and mathematics

Experience with XFoil, AVL, XRotor or similar low-fidelity aero simulation tools

Experience with mid-fidelity aero simulation tools, including potential flow, free wake, and particle wake solvers. User experience is required, developer experience is a plus

Experience modeling eVTOL and/or multicopter vehicles

Proficiency in Python and/or Matlab scripting. Experience in coding in Fortran is a plus

Familiarity with software development best practices and version control

Strong technical, written, and verbal communication skills

Ability to work in groups and individually

Experience in a fast-paced design environment

Bonus Qualifications:

Experience with gradient-based and gradient-free optimization techniques

Experience with state-of-the-art surrogate modeling techniques

Familiarity with rotorcraft aeromechanics simulation software

Familiarity with aircraft and rotorcraft certification standards (14 CFR Part 23, 25 and 27)

Familiarity with high-performance computing hardware and software
